Power restored to all customers impacted by Public Safety Power Shutoff

San Diego Gas & Electric today announced it has restored power to all customers affected by this week’s Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

The last three days brought our region extreme wildfire conditions and the strongest Santa Ana wind event in years, bringing wind speeds that approached and, in some cases, exceeded hurricane-strength levels. Here is the event by the numbers:

  • 222 of the nation’s most sophisticated weather monitoring systems continuously tracking wind speeds and other wildfire conditions – integrated with millions of historical weather data points – to help make data informed decisions on which communities were most at risk.
  • More than 100 of SDG&E’s weather monitoring stations across its service area reached the 99th percentile in wind speeds ever recorded, with the highest gust measured at 95 mph. Humidity levels in the single digits and teens across the service area, creating severe wildfire risk.
  • Approximately 117,500 customers notified of a potential PSPS; about 50,000 customers deenergized on Dec. 9 – 10. All customers restored by Dec. 11.
  • 12 Community Resource Centers opened, offering services for impacted customers such as Wi-Fi, food, and phone and medical device charging.

As soon as safety allowed, about 300 field employees and 5 helicopters mobilized to visually inspected every impacted power line prior to reenergizing for safety.

A PSPS is a last resort tool that is used to help reduce the risk of wildfires when conditions threaten the company’s ability to safely operate its electrical system. SDG&E understands that power outages are inconvenient and, in an effort to reduce wildfire risk and PSPS impacts, it has made significant investments in its wildfire resiliency efforts over the last 15 years.
