Celebrating Black History Month with the Fourth District Seniors Resource Center

In the Skyline community in southeastern San Diego, there is a great community gathering place for seniors, and it’s called the Fourth District Seniors Resource Center (FDSRC). This happening place is where seniors come to dance, socialize, enjoy recreational and nutrition programs, and celebrate important cultural events, like Black History month.

On Feb. 9, the Seniors Resource Center held its 13th Annual Black History Fundraiser Dinner Celebration.

In recognition of Black History Month and all the contributions the center and its executive director, Rosemary Pope, have made to the community, we were pleased to present a donation to support the center’s nutrition program.

Donation Helps Fund Nutrition Program

The FDSRC serves lower-to-moderate-income seniors and their families. Every day, 50 to 80 seniors come to the center for educational classes and a “twist of down home-style cookin” lunches.

“We want to impact lives by supporting nonprofits, like FDSRC, that allow seniors to not just live independently but thrive each and every day,” said Pedro Villegas, our director of Community Relations. Villegas, along with our senior community relations manager, Penney Newell, attended the Black History Month celebration and presented the donation on behalf of our company.

The Fourth District Seniors Resource Center is all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T:

  • Resilience
  • Empower
  • Service
  • Perseverance

Rousing Celebration

At the Black History Month celebration, Fourth District Councilmember Monica Montgomery honored Pope with a proclamation, highlighting her years of dedication to improving the lives of seniors in the Fourth District. Congratulations!

The rousing celebration also honored the ‘Queen of Soul’ Aretha Franklin who has said, “Being the Queen is not all about singing, and being a diva is not all about singing. It has much to do with your service to people. And your social contributions to your community and your civic contributions as well.”
